PRESS STATEMENT The National Council of Sports has announced new measures aimed at improving athletes safety via insurance policies and streamlining national sporting events following its meeting on Friday at the Kashim Shettima Hall, State Library Complex, Calabar, Cross River State. In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the Council said it noted a presentation on the growing importance of emerging risks in sports and stressed the need to provide adequate insurance coverage for athletes, officials and sports facilities during national competitions.  The Council stated that ensuring proper insurance protection has become essential to safeguarding participants and maintaining the integrity of sporting events across the country. The second Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and member of the Elite and Podium Development Board, Aku Aghazu, has commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its transformative efforts in Nigerian sports.  Speaking at the just concluded National Sports Council Technical Meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, Aghazu highlighted the NSC's deliberate planning and impactful policies, which have driven Nigeria's success across various sporting events. "We are putting measures in place to bring a New Dawn to Sports in Nigeria, and we are seeing the results," Aghazu remarked. NSC Announces Infrastructure Support Program for Host States of the National Sports Festival:

PRESS STATEMENT The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced the launch of a sports-infrastructure support program aimed at strengthening facilities in states selected to host upcoming editions of the National Sports Festival (NSF). This landmark initiative is designed to guarantee that host states are supported in their preparations to build and upgrade their sporting infrastructure, thereby elevating the overall quality, safety, and global competitiveness of the Festival. As part of this newly approved program, Enugu State, host of the next National Sports Festival, will become the first beneficiary of the NSC’s intervention. The Commission will work closely with the Enugu State Government to build a modern swimming complex, in line with international standards. The 2028 Games will be held in the beautiful South South state of Bayelsa, located in the core of the Niger Delta while the 2030 Games will be hosted in the crocodile state of Kaduna. Hosting the games in 2028, will mark the first time the National Sports Festival will be staged in Bayelsa state while staging the games in Kaduna in 2030 will mark the third time the state will be hosting the festival after the 1977 and the 2009 games. Team Nigeria has rounded off its campaign on the Tracks at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games with an excellent performance in the Mixed 4x400m relay to clinch the Gold medal ahead of Bahrain and Turkey. The quartet of Gafari Badmus, Anita Itohan Enaruna, Ezekiel Asuquo and Patience Okon George outdid themselves with a season's Best (SB) of 3:16:27s to win the Gold medal. The quartet has a mix of both experience and young as their performance crowned a very successful campaign for Nigeria in athletics at the Games. Nigeria further won an additional Gold medal in Wrestling with Esther Kolawole beating Ruzanna Mammadova of Azerbaijan in the Women's 62kg freestyle event. Team Nigeria has increased its Gold tally at the ongoing 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh after  winning 2 Gold medals in Wrestling and the  women's 4 x 100 metres on Wednesday night. In 53kg freestyle Wrestling, Christiana Ogunsanya defeated her Uzbekistani opponent, Shokhida Akhmedova 11-1 in the final, in a very convincing version to claim the Gold medal. Nigeria's exciting young quartet of Bada Toyin, Ezechukwu Miracle, Omokwe Maria and Nweke Cynthia later crowned the night with an excellent display to win Gold in the Women's 4 x 100m final in a time of 44.27 seconds. They condemned Bahrain to the silver medal with a time of 44.47s while the Gambia finished third with a time of 45.05s. Nigeria's Olatoye Oyesade, has rued missing the Gold medal as she settled for a silver medal in the Women's Hammer Throw Final at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The America based star lost the first position to Algeria's Zahra Tatar after what she admitted as her not too impressive throws in her final attempts. She claimed the silver medal with a throw of 63.34 metres while Tatar won the Gold medal with a throw of 63.55 metres and Norsijovona Zarinakhon of Uzbekistan finished third with a throw of 61.69 metres. Olatoye Oyesade however maintained that the silver medal finish at the Games will propel her to step up her preparations for a podium finish at next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. " I am very happy for this competition and the exposure to be here and it will definitely propel me for the Commonwealth Games which I am aiming to finish on the podium after finishing fourth at the last games in Birmingham in 2022". ...

Nigeria Team medal haul has continued to increase at the ongoing 6th Islamic solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after Pamela Amaechi won silver in the final of the women's discuss event with a throw of 56.99 metres. She narrowly lost the Gold medal to Cameroon's Nora Atim Monie  who had a throw of 57.04 metres while Turkey's Ozlem Becerek finished third with a throw of 55.56 metres. Meanwhile Nigeria's Patience Okon-George has qualified for the final of the women's 400m after an impressive second placed finish in one of the semi finals with a time of 52.92 seconds. As the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games enters its final week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Team Nigeria is aiming to consolidate on its first half performance where it finished 6th amongst the 58 countries on the medals table.  Team Nigeria garnered a total of 14 medals of 6 gold medals, 5 silver and 3 bronze, predominantly from Weightlifting and one silver medal from boxing. And with Track and field starting on Monday, 17th of November 2025, and Para Sports also following suit, Team Nigeria is expected to further light up the competition with more  medals and move higher on the medals table.
