Learning From the Past, to Build the Future; A Note of Caution to Nigerian Youths:
By Shittu Abede
The 2020 EndSARS protest was a watershed moment in Nigerian history, highlighting the frustrations and disillusionments of the country's youth against Nigeria Police, which snowballed into national crisis.
However, the devastating consequences of the protest, including loss of lives and property, should serve as cautionary tales, as Nigerian youths consider protesting against the Tinubu presidency, it is essential to reflect on the lessons of EndSARS and the potential risks of such actions.
While I agree, that Nigerians and her youthful population have every right to protest, we must consider that, President Tinubu is still in the early days of his administration, we can not judge his four years with a year in office and it is unfair to judge his performance without giving him a chance to implement his policies and programs. The president has promised to address the pressing issues facing Nigerian youths, including unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities. It is crucial to allow and give him the time and space to deliver on these promises.
The Tinubu administration has already began implementing various initiatives, aimed at empowering Nigerian youths; including but not limited to appointing large numbers of young chaps into his administration, which is the highest since the return of Nigeria into Democracy; other programs of this administration, such as skills acquisition, vocational training, and youth employment schemes, will soon start yielding positive results. It is essential to give these programs the chances to succeed, rather than disrupt them with protests.
Furthermore, Nigerian youths must beware of oppositions' antics, those that lost election, and are desperate of using them to get into office through the back door. They may exploit the frustrations of Nigerian youths to achieve their goals, which would be detrimental to the country's stability and progress. Youths must be wary of these bad losers and not allow themselves to be used as pawns in their political games.
In conclusion, Nigerian youths should not protest against the Tinubu presidency at this time. The president is still young in office, and his programs will soon start yielding desired results. Youths must be cautious of the oppositions and bad losers, who seek to exploit their frustrations for political gains. Instead, they should engage with the government constructively, holding them accountable for their promises while giving them the chances to deliver.
